Ashington Joint Welfare RFC

40 - 10

(HT 0-0)

Sedgefield District RUFC

Ash scored 6 tries in this hard fought win against a big physical Sedgefield team in this excellent 5 point home win.

Sedgefield had the better of the early exchanges before a fine individual try from Johnny Arkle, who broke through three attempted tackles, to give Ash a 5-0 lead after 10 minutes.

Both Henderson and Lansbury had strong runs to set up good attacking positions, and on 20 minutes a good Ashington lineout saw Arkle feed man of the match Greg Henderson who crashed over for a try converted by Arkle.

Ash were forced to defend with Menzies and Lumley both putting in excellent tackles before Sedgefield kicked a penalty. The visitors now had their tails up and were using their big forwards to try and crash through and eventually on 38 minutes Sedgefield forced their way over for a converted try. Ash were now under severe pressure but a Lumley break helped ease the pressure and then Lansbury broke from inside his own half beating two defenders before chipping the fullback to race in for an excellent try, the Arkle conversion giving Ash a 19-10 half time lead,

Ash added three further tries in the second half without conceding in what was an excellent defensive display, marred only by giving away a number of unnecessary penalties.

A kick and chase was followed up and a ruck in the Sedgefield 22 saw Richardson and Arkle break blind, the final pass to Reynolds saw the winger outpace the cover to score wide out, Arkle adding the difficult conversion.

Menzies and Young both had strong runs before Moulding recovered a ruck ball and fed Johnson whose perfectly timed pass saw Reynolds break to first tackle and run in for his second try, again Arkle converting. With the score 33-10 and still 18 minutes to play Ash were forced to defend for long periods. With time running out a Townsley break was fed out to Reynolds and from the ruck Arkle sidestepped the covering defence to score near the posts, Arkle adding his own conversion.

This was an excellent team performance build on a solid scrum and some  great defence.

Ash 2s had a narrow 15-19 loss to Durham City Saracens.

Ashingtons next league game is away to Houghton 11 April.
