It took both sides some time to get back into a rythm having not played for several weeks due to bad weather and Xmas break. The first 20 mins had plenty endeavour but little quality. However Ash struck first with a penalty by Arkle before Blyth equalised with a penalty of their own on 20 mins. Arkle scored another penalty 5 mins later to restore the Ash lead. The first real piece of quality came from a sustained Ash attack culminating in a fine finish by winger Reynolds when Ash spun the ball wide and Arkle added the conversion. This sparked Ash into life and on 36 mins centre Lansbury made a great break to score out on the left converted again by Arkle to take the score to 20-3. Blyth had the last word of the half when they crashed over for a try to make the half time score 20-.
Five minutes into the second half Ash were awarded a penalty on the Blyth 22 and Arkle's quick thinking, with a tap and go saw him break through the retreating Blyth defence for a well taken try. Blyth continued to work hard in defence and attack but could not break through for any scoring opportunity. Ash secured their fourth try bonus point with a try on the right by Joey Moulding after a good handling move. Arkle again converting for a final score of 32-8
Blyth should take heart from their performance which belied their league position.
Ashington's Man of the Match was full back Owen Jarvis closely followed by Lansbury and Scantlebury.
Ash seconds lost to Medicals seconds 38-14 but it was great to get two full teams out again. Next week Ash travel to Jarrovians and will hope to continue their winning start to 2026
